Sicilian Meals To Try The Next Time You're Dining Out

Blog

Sicily is home to some of the best food in Italy. It is a small island and has a distinct cuisine from mainland Italy. If you've never had Sicilian food, then it is definitely something you should try. Here is a list of some of the most popular Sicilian meals and a brief description of them.

Arancini

These are one of the most famous foods in all of Sicilian cuisine. It is made by taking cooked rice, forming it into a ball around either meat or cheese, coating it with breadcrumbs, and then frying it. The dish is a great appetizer. It is often served with a marinara sauce.

Caponata

If you love eggplant, then this is the dish for you. It is a sweet and sour eggplant dish, slow cooked with capers, tomatos, and onions. The eggplant is not breaded like in eggplant parmigiana. Because the eggplant is not breaded, it becomes very soft, lending the dish a stew like consistency. Sugar and vinegar are added to give the dish a complexity. It can be served as an appetizer or a main dish. It is wonderful when served with toasted bruschetta.

Pasta alla Norma

This is a delicious pasta dish that features eggplant. Penne is cooked until al dente. Eggplant are sliced thin and cooked in olive oil until brown. The eggplant is removed from the pan and tomatoes, garlic, and onion are sauteed. This pasta is then tossed with this sauce. The cheese used for the dish is ricotta salata. The cheese is grated over the pasta before serving.

Sfincione

This is the original Sicilian pizza. However, it is much different then the pizza referred to as "Sicilian pizza" in American pizzerias. Sfincione is made with a focaccia dough. The topping is usually limited to onions, salt, and olive oil. There is sometimes cheese added, but it is used sparingly. Sometimes anchovies are also added to the topping.

Lemon Granita

This is a popular dessert that is made with crushed ice. It is often served after a meal with coffee. This dessert is different from regular Italian ice's in that the ice is crushed into a larger, coarser texture. A sweet syrup, flavored with lemons, is poured over the ice.

An alternative way of serving the granita is to let it melt until it is the consistency of a slushy. This type of granita is served with a straw.

Choosing A Better Menu For Your Restaurant

When it comes to running a restaurant, it isn't easy to do everything right. When I opened my first place, I decided to fill the menu with family favorites. Unfortunately, my selections fell flat when our place actually opened, which caused a lot of financial trouble. However, after years of trying different foods and testing them out with the public, I have been able to tailor our menu for our customer base. This website is designed to help you to do the same thing. Check out these articles that can help you to learn more about ingredients, food safety, and menu selections.
